The Deep Eddy Pool

Summer presents with intense heat in the city of Austin. The temperatures here can reach as high as 90° while its average temperature runs at mid-90°s. This hot and humid setting is ideal for swimming particularly in the Deep Eddy Pool in Austin.

The Deep Eddy Pool is a man-made swimming pool which is one of the oldest that can be found in Texas. It began as a swimming hole in the Colorado River and featured a bathhouse that was built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression era. In this place, there is a large boulder that can be found that forms an eddy where people can swim.

Eventually, the place became a resort in 1920s. Around 1915, A. J Eilers bought and developed the land surrounding the swimming hole. He then built a concrete pool which served as the centerpiece for the resort later. He called this as the Deep Eddy Bathing Beach. The resort featured areas for camping and there are cabins and concessions that are also present.

One of its famous attractions then was the Lorena’s Diving Horse. In this attraction, there was a ramp that led to 15m diving platform which was placed at the deeper end of the swimming pool. It was from there where the horse and rider would dive. Other amenities that were available include a zip line, a diving baby and a Ferris wheel.

Today, the original bathhouses in Deep Eddy Pool are mostly closed. The water in there is not chlorinated and its wading pool is open to the public from March to October. During summer, Splash Party Movie Nights are featured.
